December, Christmas & the Quiet Shift of Energy

Creating homes that hold joy, rest, remembrance and renewal

December arrives carrying a very particular quality of Qi.
It is the Earth Rat month, the closing breath of a long 9 Year, and a gentle but honest invitation to soften, complete, and prepare for what comes next.

This month runs from 7 December to 12 January, and it offers us something precious:
a chance to tend to our homes and hearts before the pace of 2026 begins to gather.

For some, December is full of gatherings, laughter and shared meals.
For others, it is quieter.
And for some, it carries grief — especially when this is the first Christmas without someone deeply loved.

If this year has not given you much room to catch a breath,
if you have felt the year has been weighted and a little harder to move through,
you are not alone.

Feng shui does not ask us to pretend.
It asks us to work with what is real — and to create spaces that support us exactly where we are.

The Energy of December: Earth Rat & the Closing of the 9 Year

The Earth Rat brings:

  • stillness

  • grounding

  • strategy

  • emotional enquiry

  • quiet preparation

This is not a month for rushing or forcing cheer.
It is a month for clearing residue, finishing what is unfinished, and making room — emotionally and physically — for the new cycle ahead.

The 9 Year teaches:

  • completion

  • forgiveness

  • emotional honesty

  • non-attachment

  • letting old patterns finally rest

If things have surfaced emotionally this month, it is not a step backwards.
It is the year gently asking you to put something down.

Where to Gather: Creating Joyful Spaces for Family & Friends

If you are hosting or gathering this Christmas, you don’t need to use every room.
Choose the spaces that already feel welcoming — the ones that hold warmth without effort.

South-East — The Standout Space

This is the most supportive area in the home this month.

The South-East carries:

  • current wealth energy

  • Victory Qi

  • the sum of ten — completion, success, and getting things finished well

Use this area for:

  • shared meals

  • food preparation

  • wrapping gifts

  • finishing last-minute tasks

  • conversations that feel purposeful and uplifting

Open windows when you can.
Keep surfaces clear.
Let movement and light do the work.

This is also an excellent space to complete things before Christmas — your lists, your preparations, your mental load.

East — Family, Elders & Shared History

The East represents:

  • family

  • elders

  • ancestry

  • continuity

This is a beautiful space for:

  • family gatherings

  • shared memories

  • photographs

  • gentle conversations with older relatives

Support the East with calm water energy — especially during a season that can feel emotionally full.

Spaces for Solace, Creativity & Quiet Presence

Not everyone celebrates Christmas.
Not everyone wants noise.
And even in a full house, we sometimes need somewhere to breathe.

Central Palace — Calm & Gentle Support

This is a grounding space for:

  • rest

  • reflection

  • journalling

  • quiet presence

If someone in your home is unwell, this area benefits from a salt water cure, as does the South.

North — Emotional Resilience & Gentle Planning

The North supports:

  • creativity

  • reflection

  • quiet future planning

Keep water energy present here to support flow, especially during a time of spending and emotional output.

For Those Navigating Grief This Christmas

If this is your first Christmas without someone special, please know this:
there is no right way to do this day.

Grief does not require elaborate ritual.
Often, the most meaningful acknowledgements are simple, practical, and woven quietly into the day.

Food can be one of the gentlest ways to honour someone.
It carries memory, care, and continuity without needing explanation.

This year, in our home, I am making Rob’s mum’s most memorable “glue pie”
a favourite of Rob and the kids, and something she never missed bringing to a celebration.
There was not a birthday or gathering where those pies didn’t arrive with her.

I am the only one in the family who knows how to make them properly.
Making them feels like a soft thread between past and present —
not dramatic, not performative, just quietly meaningful.

If this resonates for you, consider:

  • cooking or serving something they always brought

  • sharing it without explanation if words feel like too much

  • letting the memory sit naturally at the table

Grief and joy can sit side by side.
One does not cancel the other.

Acknowledgement does not need ceremony.
Sometimes it is simply doing something the same way they always did — and letting that be enough.

Dates to Work With Over the Holiday Period

25 December — Stable Day

A stable day supports:

  • steadiness

  • togetherness

  • familiarity

  • gentle joy

Ideal for shared meals, relaxed gatherings, and routines that feel comforting.
Avoid forcing emotional conversations. Let the day unfold naturally.

26 December (Boxing Day) — Initiate Day

An auspicious day for:

  • new ideas

  • fresh intentions

  • gentle beginnings

Even one small step taken today carries momentum.

29 December — Success Day, Phoenix Day & Green Dragon Day

A powerful day for:

  • planning for 2026

  • organising goals

  • preparing consciously for the year ahead

If you choose one day to align with success energy, make it this one.

New Year’s Eve — Open Day

Supports openness and transition.
Keep it light. Let it prepare the ground.

New Year’s Day — Close Day (Auspicious)

Perfect for rest, reflection and letting the new year settle.
Not everything needs to begin loudly.

Important Feng Shui Notes for December

  • Avoid candles or open flames in:

    • the North-East

    • the South

  • Maintain water energy in:

    • the East

    • the North

    • secondary wealth areas

  • Use salt water cures in:

    • the South

    • the Central Palace (especially if someone is unwell)

  • Avoid unnecessary renovations in the North-East

A Quiet Thread That Runs Through December

Sometimes it isn’t the decorations or the schedule that makes a home feel whole.
Sometimes it is one familiar dish.
One remembered habit.
One small act done with care.

Like a pie that always arrived at celebrations —
made again, quietly, with love —
so that what mattered is still present, just in a new way.

December is not asking you to do more.
It is asking you to finish gently, love honestly, and prepare quietly.

Create one space that feels safe.
One that feels warm.
One that lets you catch your breath.

That is how we step into 2026 with clarity, strength, and grace.

Happy Feng Shui
